Learn how to protect your most valuable asset — your skin — at the next Girls Night Out.

More than 1 million people were diagnosed with skin (nonmelanoma) cancer in 2010 in the U.S. and nearly 1,000 people died last year from the cancer that affects women of all ages. Effingham Hospital’s Girls Night Out program in June will focus on “Protecting Your Finest Outerwear” with important information about skin cancer and skin health. The free event will be held June 28 from 7-9 p.m. at the Effingham Imaging Center, 110 Goshen Rd., Rincon.

Special guest speaker Dr. John Paletta will review the signs of skin cancer and the best ways to protect your skin from not only cancer, but also the dreaded signs of aging. Skin cancer forms in the tissues of the skin, and most skin cancers form in older people on parts of the body exposed to the sun or in people who have weakened immune systems. Dr. Paletta also will discuss everyday and simple ways to keep your skin looking its best. Bring all the important women in your life to ensure they are educated on how to protect their very best, and only true outerwear!

All attendees will have a chance to win a free full body skin screening to check for any signs of skin cancer or skin problems. Girls Night Out always features refreshments and gifts. Most importantly, women in attendance have a chance to spend a little “me time” with fellow moms, sisters, daughters and aunts while learning valuable health and wellness information.

Girls Night Out is held every fourth Tuesday of the month from 7-9 p.m. The next Girls Night Out on July 26 will focus on ovarian cancer.
