The Effingham County branch of the NAACP held its annual Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1 at Union Spring Independent Methodist Church on Berryville Road.

Marion Housey was awarded the NAACP Leadership Award for his many years of service. Housey is one of the founding members of the local branch of the NAACP, and was the vice president for several years.

The speaker was Leroy Lloyd, president of the local NAACP branch. His topic was “Seeing, Hearing, Remembering.” Lloyd reminded those in attendance they have to remember and understand where they came from in order to advance their cause.
