A Bloomingdale man who was hit by a tractor-trailer while riding his bicycle on Highway 80 on Jan. 9 has died.

Douglas Edwards, 56, died Friday at Memorial University Medical Center from the injuries he sustained in the crash, said Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Edwards reportedly was struck by the semi as he tried to cross Highway 80 on his bicycle near the Effingham-Chatham county line just before 7 p.m. He was flown by Lifestar helicopter to Memorial.

Charges are not expected to be filed against the truck driver.

“All indications are he crossed into the path of the semi truck,” Ehsanipoor said.

Alcohol may have been a factor in Edwards riding into the path of the tractor-trailer, Ehsanipoor said.
