Chamber to hold candidates' forum

<p>The Effingham Chamber of Commerce has announced that a candidate forum will be held May 5 at 6 p.m. at the Mars Theatre in downtown Springfield.</p><p>This forum, sponsored by Hussey, Gay and Bell, will feature candidates who have opposition for the board of commissioners chairman, school board, magistrate court judge, superior court judge, and state representative for District 159. Candidates will be questioned by a panel made up of two journalists and representatives from the Republican and Democratic parties. Refreshments will be served and will be provided by the Effingham Herald and Effingham Now newspapers.</p><p>In an effort to get the candidates and the forum in front of more of the county, students from Effingham County High School and South Effingham High School wil film and live stream the forum. Rincon City Council Approves First Pay Raise in 14 Years

Rincon City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve its first pay raise in 14 years, increasing council members’ pay to $750 per month and the mayor’s pay to $950 per month starting next year. The raises will apply to those elected in November, when three council seats and the mayor’s office will be on the ballot.
