An Effingham County man was one of four people killed in a massive pileup Wednesday on Interstate 16.

Joel Moore, 61, from Clyo died after his Ford pickup was caught in the 27-car crash that took place between Macon and Dublin near the Bleckley-Laurens county line. Thick fog was reported in the area.

The investigation of the crash has turned over to the Georgia State Patrol’s specialized collision reconstruction team, which is based in Reidsville. The team mapped the scene Wednesday while the vehicles were still in place.

Georgia State Patrol troopers investigating the individual crashes, which began around 8:10 a.m., will be submitting their initial crash reports over the next few days, according to the GSP. There were 10 separate crashes involving 27 vehicles, including seven commercial motor vehicles. One of those was an empty fuel tanker which ruptured and burst into flames.

The accidents occurred over a quarter-mile stretch of I-16 westbound. Nine people were hurt in the crashes and were taken to Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.
