Commission, sheriff's office announce closings

SPRINGFIELD -- Due to possible extreme weather and dangerous driving conditions, the Effingham County Board of Commissioners offices and the administrative portion of the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office will be closed Wednesday.

Additionally, they will observe a delayed opening of noon for Thursday. All emergency and essential personnel will still be active.

A wintery mix is predicted to hit ther area between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Wednesday with a high in the low 30s.

Effingham County has 482 miles of roadway and many roads will not be treated. The sheriff's urges residents to stay home if they have the option.

The National Weather Service issued this warning: Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Plan on difficult travel conditions. Total snow and sleet accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze are possible. The primary threat will be icing of bridges and overpasses, with a secondary threat being downed powerlines and possible outages.

WHERE...Effingham, Inland Bryan, Coastal Bryan, Inland Chatham, Coastal Chatham, Long, Inland Liberty, Coastal Liberty, Inland McIntosh and Coastal McIntosh Counties.

WHEN...From Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.
