Council denies Berry's appeal

Rincon City Council members denied, by a unanimous vote, Michael Berry's appeal to be reinstated as poilce chief Monday night.

Berry was fired in September after he was placed on administrative leave and then disobeyed a directive from Mayor Ken Lee and the council to avoid contact with police department personnel and police officers unless with an approved escort to the police department. Berry countered that he was never given anything in writing nor was he given anything in writing stipulating the reasons for his suspension.

Lee said the investigation he and city attorney Raymond Dickey are conducting into allegations that led to Berry's suspension is close to being finished and that the city may move soon to hire a new police chief.
