A Guyton man is in custody in the Effingham County Jail and has been charged in the death of a toddler.

Lester Griffin, 22, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation with malice murder in the weekend death of a toddler.

An autopsy performed by the GBI crime lab in Savannah indicated that the child, Dylan Helmey, died from multiple blunt force trauma. Helmey was 2 years old and was about to turn 3. Helmey died Sunday afternoon.

Griffin had a first appearance hearing Thursday and was remanded to Superior Court. A preliminary hearing or bond hearing is likely to take place next week.

Griffin was arrested April 30 last year and charged with cruelty to children in the first degree for an incident dating back to Oct. 17, 2006. He was released on $500 bond the day after his arrest and was awaiting court proceedings on that charge.
