One man is behind bars today after going on an overnight burglary and entering auto spree in south Effingham County.

Deputies began receiving several reports from citizens in the Highway 80 area in reference to several entering auto’s, burglaries, thefts and a stolen vehicle. Sheriff’s investigators and members of the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit immediately responded and began investigating.

A vehicle taken from a residence on Highway 80 was located by deputies a short time later at a nearby location. The suspect, identified as Spencer Todd Wix, 17, of Bloomingdale, was tracked to a residence on Bay Lane.

Wix was taken into custody after a violent struggle with sheriff’s deputies. During the struggle, one deputy received minor injuries, and Wix was subdued with a taser.

Wix is facing multiple charges including twelve counts of entering an auto, two counts of burglary, theft by taking a motor vehicle, criminal attempt to commit arson and felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Wix faces 20 additional counts of entering an auto.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming.

Investigators have been able to recover a majority of the stolen property including computers, firearms and a four wheeler.

Wix is currently being held in the Effingham County Jail.
