A man accused in the June death of a Springfield toddler has been indicted on eight charges by an Effingham County grand jury.

Lester Casey Griffin has been indicted on four counts of murder, two separate counts of cruelty to children and one count each of aggravated battery and aggravated assault in the June 28 death of Dylan Helmey. Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents charge that Griffin struck Helmey in the chest, and that blow resulted in the child’s death.

Griffin was indicted on one count of murder and one count each for murder in the commission of a felony for cruelty to a child, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

He also was indicted for cruelty to children, aggravated battery and aggravated assault for allegedly striking Helmey in the chest. He was indicted on another count of cruelty to children for failing to seek necessary medical treatment.

The child’s mother, Ciara Danielle Helmey, also was indicted on count of cruelty to children for failing to seek necessary medical treatment.
