An Effingham County man already in jail and charged with the shooting deaths of his father and brother faces more charges.

Craig Heidt, 41, has been charged with three offenses stemming from an Aug. 19 incident at the Screven County Jail. The Screven County Sheriff’s Department is charging Heidt — who has been indicted for murder in the August 2008 deaths of his father Phillip Heidt and brother Carey Heidt — with interference with government property, possession of a prohibited item by an inmate and possession of a cell phone by an inmate.

Heidt damaged a jail-issued mattress, according to Screven Sheriff’s Sgt. Brett Dickerson. He also was found with a small razor blade.

The incident is still under investigation and Dickerson could not release details on how the mattress was damaged or how Heidt obtained the razor and cell phone.

The interference with government property and possession of a prohibited item are felony charges. The possession of a cell phone is a misdemeanor.

Heidt was arrested in May and charged with two counts of murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated battery. Heidt was arraigned in June and pleaded not guilty to those charges.
