One suspect remains in the Effingham County Jail facing several charges after leading Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies on a high speed pursuit late Tuesday night.

According to ECSO reports, a deputy clocked a motorcycle traveling 120 mph on Courthouse Road shortly after 11 p.m. Deputies pursued the motorcycle with speeds reaching in excess of 140 mph.

The driver, Brian Ray, 35, of Springfield, led deputies on the chase from Courthouse Road to Highway 17 in Guyton and eventually onto Highway 119. The chase ended in the Hidden Creek subdivision where he was captured.

Sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement agencies attempted to funnel Ray out of the way of high-traffic areas, according to the ECSO.

“We had deputies blocking other intersections for the safety of anyone who might have been on the road,” ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor said. “We were trying to force him into a less congested area and trying to block to where he couldn’t get out. Deputies were able to coordinate with other departments on where they needed to be.”

During the pursuit, Ray struck a patrol car with his motorcycle, knocking  a rear view mirror off the deputy’s vehicle. He fled on foot in a wooded area where he was eventually subdued by deputies with a taser following a brief struggle. A deputy suffered a broken finger in the altercation.

Ray is facing multiple charges including fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, DUI, reckless driving, two counts of felony obstruction on a law enforcement officer, driving with a suspended license, and several other traffic charges.
