SPRINGFIELD -- Old Glory and a vivid spirit of appreciation proudly waved at Veterans Park of Effingham County on Saturday.

About 125 people braved breezy, chilly weather to observe Veterans Day.

Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie set the tone for the occasion during his welcoming remarks.

While speaking directly to the many veterans in attendance, McDuffie said, "On behalf of the sheriff's office, I will promise you that each and every member of the sheriff's office will stand at the raising of the flag and the playing of the national anthem. We will do this in honor of you, our veterans, in celebration of the greatest country in the world."

After McDuffie's comments, veterans from each of the five service branches were asked to stand by Danny Burgstiner, the master of ceremonies. The Army and Marine Corps had the largest contingents.

As each branch was recognized, its familiar musical theme song blared on the public address system.

The featured speaker, introduced by Tommy Allen, was Lt. Col. Glyn Goldwire, a Springfield native and battalion commander at Fort Stewart. He is a Bronze Star recipient and has garnered many other awards for meritorious service. He has served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"Here today, we honor heroes to remember their achievements, their courage and their dedication," Goldwire said. "Thank you for your sacrifice; thank you for being heroes that join us in this group; and we honor your spirit. We stand here in the midst of patriots ..."
