Republican Vera Jones, commissioner for Effingham County's District 2, did not qualify to seek re-election.

The qualifying period for local, state and federal offices started Monday and ended Friday at noon.

The primary election is May 22 and the general election is Nov. 6.

Roger Burdette, another Republican, is the lone candidate in the District 2 county commission race. No Democrats qualified to run for any local offices.

Commissioners Jamie Deloach and Phil Kieffer qualified to run in county commission District 3 and 5, respectively. They don't have any Republican primary challengers.

Incumbents Robert Grant and Beth Helmly of the Effingham County Board of Education face primary challenges in their non-partisan races.

Gant's District 1 seat is also being sought by Nancy Floyd and Lynn Anderson. In District 4, Helmly will face Ben Johnson.

Rounding out the local races in the May 22 primary, State Court Judge Ronald Thompson (non-partisan) and Solicitor Mark Lee (Republican) will be unopposed.

Republican Rep. Bill Hitchens of District 161 is the lone local state lawmaker to draw opposition. He will face Democrat Adam Bridges in November.

District 4 Sen. Jack Hill and District 159 Rep. Jon Burns, both Republicans, won't race a primary or general election challenger.

At the federal level, First District Congressman Buddy Carter didn't draw a Republican challenger. He will face the winner of the Democratic primary race between Lisa Ring and Barbara Seidman.

Twelfth District Congressman Rick Allen will face Eugene Yu in the Republican primary. The winner will take on the winner of the Democratic primary race between Francys Johnson, Robert Ingham and Trent Nesmith.
