SPRINGFIELD -- Jan Landing and Jeff Shielke have qualified for the Nov. 2 special election to fill the Effingham County Board of Education District 2 seat.

The seat opened in June when Troy Alford resigned. He surrendered the post so that his son, Judd, could serve as assistant principal at South Effingham High School.

A state law enacted in 2009 prohibits school board members and superintendents from having immediate family members in high-ranking positions in the districts they serve.
