Effingham County Schools is enhancing safety measures with the rollout of the OPENGATE Weapons Detection System at its high school campuses.
This advanced technology was implemented beginning Tuesday, April 22, as part of the district’s ongoing commitment to providing a secure learning environment for all students and staff.
The OPENGATE system uses non-intrusive technology to detect potential threats and will be operated by trained staff at all entry points. This addition is part of a broader effort to strengthen campus safety protocols across the district.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. The implementation of the OPENGATE system is a proactive step in ensuring our campuses remain safe, welcoming spaces for learning,” Superintendent Dr. Yancy Ford stated in a release.
Effingham County Schools will continue to work closely with law enforcement and safety experts to ensure best practices are followed and students are supported throughout this transition, the district release continued.
The increased security measures come less than two months after a student was removed from South Effingham High School for concealing a firearm in a backpack.
