Empty Stocking campaign begins

“It’s time for Effingham citizens to come together for the annual effort to fill the empty stockings for children, families and the elderly,” said Reggie Loper.

Loper is president of the Effingham Exchange Club, the sponsoring agency for the Empty Stocking Fund.

The Empty Stocking Fund, with the cooperation of the Effingham Family and Children Services, helps families, children and the elderly with some of their needs and wishes for Christmas.

“We are able to help several hundred every year, while we are not able to provide large amounts per donor, we are able to share the Christmas joy with many who need our help,” Loper said.

Funds are distributed through letters of credit issued to local vendors, who agree to participate in the program. The letters of credit must be used for toys, clothes, food or medicines; no purchase of tobacco or alcoholic products may be purchased with the proceeds of these letters of credit.

Members of the Exchange Club, under the leadership of Loper as the chief elf, will call on local businesses and individuals to seek the funds for this year’s effort. Funds may be dropped off at the BB&T or Citizens banks in Springfield, Guyton and Rincon or may be mailed to P.O. Box 379, Springfield, GA. 31329.

The time and the season is right for helping make sure that our neighbors in Effingham can have a smile on their faces at Christmas. “It will put a smile on your face to be able to help put those smiles on faces all over Effingham,” Loper said.
