SPRINGFIELD — Dusty Jett went from the bottom of the barrel to the top of the heap during his 10 years of participation in goat shows.

Jett, a 17-year-old South Effingham senior, entered five animals in the 74th Effingham County Fair Goat Show on Oct. 23. He won first place in four divisions and second in another, taking grand champion honors in the market doe and market wether classes.

It was Jett’s final fair show.

“This was one of my better years,” Jett said. “I didn’t come in expecting my goats would do quite that good.”

Jett put the knowledge he has gained over the past decade to good use.

“I have a much better class of goat now,” he said. “I started at the tail end of the pack with just some old regular goats. I’ve learned a lot.

“I could judge a show now.”
