Lady Mustangs finish third in state tournament debut

South Effingham's girls golf team finished third in the Class AAAAA golf tournament at Braelin Golf Club in Peachtree City on May 22. It was the Lady Mustangs' initial apperance in the two-day event.
Abbie Cheney (90-84), Bella Sapp (83-89), Carson Taylor (110-100) and Logan Byrd (109-111) combined for a 555 in sporadic rain. Starrs Mill and Veterans finished first and second, respectively, with a 478 and 505.
The field was rounded out by Carrollton (562), Ware County (565), Ola (573), Buford (579), Statesboro (579) and McIntosh (592), Union Grove (621) and Flowery Branch (648).
Liza Banks of Starrs Mill was the individual champion, scoring 74-77. Starrs Mill posted three of the top seven scores and four of the top 10 en route to the team title.
Sapp's 172 tied Starrs Mills' Julia Schlafhauser for 10th.
South Effingham placed eighth in the Class AAAAA boys tournament at Planterra Ridge, also in Peachtree City. Logan Wise (82-79), Logan Sapp (77-74), Aaron Elmore (79-88) and Nicholas Hofmann (84-96) combined for a 659, giving them the second-best showing in school history.
Starrs Mill won (598) and was followed by McIntosh (606), Ola (618), Statesboro (629), Carrollton (631), Wayne County (633) and Harris County (652). Buford (668), Veterans (668), Ware County (678) and Riverwood finished ninth through 12th, respectively.
Luke Phillips of Starrs Mill was the low medalist, carding a one-under 142. Logan Sapp's score was the 12th best.
