Children in Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties can make the most of their summer with Live Oak Public Libraries and the annual vacation reading program. This year’s theme is “Reading Takes You Everywhere!” and three separate kick-off events are planned. Children can register for VRP and enjoy shows by some of the area’s most popular children’s entertainers.
Effingham County’s VRP kick-off is set for Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Effingham Branch in Rincon. Storyteller Sean Driscoll will headline the program with “World Tour of Tales.” Activities will also be held in the adjacent Rincon Jaycee Park. The branch is located on Highway 21 at 17th Street in Rincon, 826-2222.
Chatham County’s VRP Fest will take place Saturday at Daffin Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature Chad Crews and his Safari Show, Nature Gran, The Puppet People (11:30 a.m.), and storyteller Sean Driscoll (noon).
Liberty County will also hold their VRP festival on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Branch Library in Hinesville. Highlights include Chad Crews and his Safari Show and games for the entire family. The branch is located at 236 Memorial Drive in Hinesville, 368-4003.
The vacation reading program is scheduled for June 1 through Aug. 17. Live Oak Public Libraries staff members at the various branches have worked for months to line up special programs at all of the branches. These include “Mad Science,” “Harry Potter Jeopardy,” “Music Makers!”, “Worm Squirm,” “Dance Dance Revolution,” “Summer Wildlife,” “It’s a Mystery!”, “Manga Madness,” “A Unique Journey Through Savannah,” “World Tour of Tales” and more.
In addition, staff at the library branches have packed their calendars full of events this summer. “Puppet Magic,” “Under the Sea,” “T-Shirt Design,” “Origami,” “Hank the Cowdog,” “Pet Show,” “Sandscapes,” “Daytime Astronomy” and “Jeopardy for Preschoolers” are just a few.
For a full listing of programs and activities, stop by any library branch to pick up a calendar or go to www.liveoakpl.org.
