A local pastor died Saturday in a one-car crash on Highway 119 near the Georgia/South Carolina state line.

Jeff Rollins died in the wreck, investigators confirmed Saturday night. Rollins, 55, was the pastor of First Baptist Church of Springfield.

Rollins’ car went off the road and hit a tree around 5:15 p.m., according to investigators. Rollins was the only person in the car.

The following message was posted on FBC Springfield’s Facebook page: “With broken hearts, we ask for prayer for our church family but especially the family of our own Jeff Rollins. He was involved in a fatal car accident this evening. We will have a time of prayer and worship tomorrow.”

Rollins is survived by his wife Dorothy and their four children. He had led the FBC Springfield congregation since 1989.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol continue to investigate the crash.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Springfield.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Springfield.
