SPRINGFIELD — In an effort to respect the COVID-19 social-distancing guidelines set by Gov. Brian Kemp, Veterans Park of Effingham County will not host its annual Memorial Day event May 25.

“Even though there will not be a formal program, the park remains open and you are welcome to visit at your leisure,” said Tommy Allen, a member of the Veterans Park committee.

The park features a wall with the names of local veterans starting with the Revolutionary War.

“Even though we will not be having a formal program, we encourage you to remember this Memorial Day and share with your family the meaning of this day,” Allen said.

On Monday, the Effingham County Recreation Department will begin displaying the names of approximately 60 veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice on its display board on Ga. Hwy 21. A different list of names is set to run each day through May 25.

“We remember these soldiers and pray for their families,” Allen said.

Allen remains hopeful that Veterans Park events will resume soon. The next one is scheduled Nov. 11, Veterans Day, at 11 a.m.
