SPRINGFIELD -- The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit got a big win in the early morning hours Saturday when it seized more than 10 pounds of pure fentanyl and 2.5 ounces of black tar heroin.

Fentanyl is a very powerful opioid drug — 80-100 times more powerful than morphine —and exposure to even small amounts can cause overdose and death. Fentanyl can kill in a matter of minutes.

Drug agents began working on this case last November. The extensive investigation led them to 45 year-old Jody Callison and a house in the Foxbow subdivision. Callison was taken into custody and charged with trafficking fentanyl and heroin. He remains in the Effingham County Jail.

This is an ongoing investigation and more charges could be pending. Anyone with information is asked to call the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office at 912-754-3449 or you can text a tip anonymously ay 847411,
