GUYTON — Darius Scott is about to take the biggest leaps of his life. One is athletic and the other is academic.
On Dec. 19 in the South Effingham High School cafeteria, the senior track standout inked a national letter of intent to attend Cornell University, an Ivy League institution that accepted only 14.1 percent of its applicants in 2016.
Scott placed fourth in Class AAAAA in the triple jump last spring, covering 47 feet, 2 inches. That is the best ever by an Effingham County athlete.
He also claimed fourth in the long jump at the AAU National Junior Olympics.
“I’ll be doing the triple jump and long jump at Cornell,” Scott said.
Scott isn’t focused solely on competing.
“My first goal is to graduate (from Cornell),” he said.
