Port Wentworth officer, Effingham County deputy injured in crash while pursuing theft suspects

 RINCON -- Two law enforcement officers were hurt Thursday while pursuing a trio of theft suspects who managed to get away.

The incident started with a reported theft at Wal-Mart in Rincon. A Rincon Police Department officer stopped the suspects in their vehicle but they fled the scene.

A Port Wentworth officer attempted to stop the speeding suspects but they fled again and the officer pursued them.

At that point, Effingham County deputies heard about the chase on their radios and joined the pursuit, which ended in a crash near the southbound I-95 exit and on Ga. Hwy 21.

A Port Wentworth officer and Effingham County deputy were involved in the crash. The officer sustained serious injuries and the deputy's injuries were minor.

The  suspects, Jermaine Kareem Evans, Jamri Pai-Shaw Chisolm and a third unidentified man, are wanted on several charges. They were last seen in a 2020 Hyundai Elantra.
