Three county commission races await Effingham County voters today.

Polls are open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. for the partisan general primaries. In District 3, voters will chose between incumbent Jeff Utley and challenger Steve Mason for the Republican nomination for the seat. Former commissioner Homer Wallace and Lillie Smart-Brown are vying for the Democratic nomination for the District 3 seat.

In District 2, the winner of the seat won’t have to wait until November to be declared. But it is a three-way race for the seat, with incumbent Myra Lewis, former school board chairwoman Vera Jones and former Rincon city councilman Michael King. Should no candidate capture more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff between the two leading vote-getters will be held Aug. 10. With no Democrat running for the post, the winner of the
Republican nomination will not face opposition in the November general election.

Phil Kieffer is running unopposed for the Republican nomination for the District 5 seat, and Delmons White has no opposition in the District 5 Democratic primary.

Early and advanced voting concluded Friday, with 527 ballots cast. Effingham Elections Supervisor Gail Whitehead said there’s no telling what today’s turnout may be.

“We hope it’s going to be very, very strong,” she said.

There are a host of statewide races today, including party primaries for U.S. senator, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, insurance commissioner, labor commissioner, state school superintendent and a Public Service Commission seat.

Effingham County voters also will choose between incumbent John Barrow and challenger Regina Thomas on the Democratic side or from among four candidates up for the Republican nomination in the U.S. House of Representatives’ 12th District seat.

Primaries also are being conducted for the General Assembly. State Sen. Jack Hill (R-Reidsville) faces no opposition in the primary nor any in the general election. State Reps. Jon Burns (R-Newington) and Ann Purcell (R-Rincon) are not opposed in the primaries.
