Effingham County won one of three matches in the State Duals in Macon on Thursday through Saturday.
The Rebels opened with a 36-35 loss to Dacula on Thursday. On Friday, they rebounded to beat Greenbriar 52-20. Then they dropped Saturday’s match to Lee County 48-25.
“Overall, because of our youth, I thought we wrestled well,” Effingham County coach Nico Guggino said. “Our older guys did the way I expected, but the surprise was that our young kids wrestled hard. Even though they did not win some of their matches, they did go out and compete. They were trying new things and showed some good signs of what is to come in the future.
“I was proud of their effort and support for their teammates.”
Guggino has high hopes for his wrestlers at the state tournament in February.
“Zebrandon Gant (195 lbs., 43-0), Josh Wright (126l, 38-9), Zekeil Walls (220, 37-7) and Logan Kira (106, 32-13) had a really good weekend and beat some good kids,” Guggino said. “They are getting better each week and, hopefully, will peak out at state when it counts. We need to have a great two weeks of practice so we can go into the state competition running.”
