SPRINGFIELD -- Effingham County wide receiver Trevon Wilkenson has snagged an opportunity to play college football.

On Friday in the Effingham County gymnasium lobby, Wilkenson signed a letter of intent to attend Minnesota West Community and Technical College of the NJCAA. The school is located in Worthington, Minn., in the southern part of the state.

Wilkenson landed the chance through Twitter interaction with a Blue Jays coach. He responded to a questionnaire and his northward course was charted.

"A coach hit me up on there," Wilkenson said. "He asked me if Minneosta would be a great place for me and he sent me the football questions. I filled that out and he saw my film, and I went on their website and looked at their campus. I felt like it was a great place."

Wilkenson said he will likely by used at wide receiver and defensive back. He played both positions for Effingham County. He scored two touchdowns as a senior, including a 72-yard catch in a 38-13 pasting of Bradwell Institute.

"I'm looking to play basketball there, too." he said. "Everybody thought (I was more of a basketball player) but it turns out I love football more."

Wilkenson has yet to visit the Minneosta West Community and Technical College campus. He will see it for the first time when he reports for summer workouts. He has never ventured further north than Atlanta, he said.

Rebels athletic director Matt Huntley joked about that Wilkenson needed to obtain a couple of Effingham County sweathirts to take with him to his college destination. The high temperature in Worthington rarely ventures above the mid 20s during the winter.

Wilkenson said he intends to pursue a degree in sports management.
