Rincon is getting ready to recycle — at least for a day.
The city is looking into the possibility of recycling on a regular basis but until that decision is made, residents will have an opportunity May 22 to bring in all their recyclable items.
This will mark the second year for the Great American Clean Up program and this year tires will also be accepted. This year’s honorary chairman is Charlie Curtis and the drop off points will be at Rincon City Hall and Macomber Park on Lexington Avenue. Drop off centers will be open from 9 a.m.-noon.
Smaller items such as alkaline batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and cell phones can be dropped off at the City hall while larger items such as tires should be taken to Macomber Park. There will be a small fee of 50 cents per tire. Bagged yard debris can be taken to Macomber Park or City Hall.
The city also will be taking nominations for free yard care for city residents with a hardship. Four residents’ lawns will be cared for by four area lawn care businesses, A&P Lawn Care, Rare Earth Management, Reese’s Lawn Care and Pressure Washing, Thomas Lonon Lawn Care, and Tiger Landscape. Applications for lawn care assistance may be picked up at Rincon City Hall.
Project coordinator Kia Westmoreland said the lawn care program is designed for seniors or disabled persons who are in need of help with their lawn. People can nominate themselves or neighbors and friends.
She also said that there is no cost for disposing of yard debris, as long as it is bagged.
The city took in more than 600 bags last year.
Volunteers on hand to help with the recycling include members of the Church of the Harvest, The Rincon Garden Club and The Three ‘K’ Pact Initiative.
