The most recent traffic accident at a troublesome intersection in Springfield May 5, involved three vehicles and resulted in one person being transported to the hospital with “non-life-threatening” injuries, according to a spokesperson for the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
The traffic signal at McCall Road and Hwy. 21 along with turn lanes are still under construction.
The intersection has been the scene of accidents – some with fatalities – to the point that county commissioners worked with Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) to separate that project from another nearby project (a roundabout at Courthouse and McCall) to allow the county to get the traffic light installed more quickly.
The bid was awarded in January and the initial timeline was for the project to be completed in 90 days – meaning by the end of April.
However, according to a county spokesperson, “In late February, the contractor was awarded an extension because of procurement issues. This extended the time for completion of the project from 90 to 150 days.
“The county continues to push for it to be completed by the end of this month. It is more likely, however, that it will be middle of June before the work is done,” the county spokesperson added.
The cost for the project is just under $421,000 and is funded through the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST).
