SPRINGFIELD — City of Springfield voters will have a couple extra items to consider on their May 24 primary ballot.

In addition to the regular slate of races for local, state and federal offices, Springfield’s ballot will feature a special election to fill an impending at-large city council vacancy and a referendum.

Qualifying is underway through Friday for the city council seat currently held by Mallory Jenkins. Jenkins, elected last November, is in the process of moving to a new home outside the city limits and will resign soon.

The candidate qualifying fee is $25. To be eligible, candidates must be:

— At least 21 years of age

— A resident of the City of Springfield for 12 months

— A qualified voter in the City of Springfield; and not be disqualified to hold an office in the state.

The special referendum will determine if the City of Springfield governing authority is authorized to permit and regulate Sunday sales of distilled spirits or beverage purposes for beverages purposes by the drink. The ballot will include a similar question about the sale of malt liquor and wine on Sunday, plus licensing.
