SPRINGFIELD -- For nearly two decades, Carroll Zittrouer was as much of a fair figure as the Ferris wheel. That came to an end Tuesday night.

Zittrouer conducted his final livestock show at the 74th Effingham County Fair. He served as the fair's Livestock Committee chairman for 17 years.

Interest in the show of cows, goats, hogs and lambs grew greatly under his tutelage. He will be succeeded by Gerald Kessler.

In his final act as chairman, Zittrouer won the Buy-In Showmanship trophy at the end of Tuesday's Swine Show. He teamed with Tommy Long, a colorful clown and Fair Committee member who played the role of the hog. The comblination drew laughter and approval from the crowd.

Josh Dickerson, who had the show's grand and reserve champion market hog, served as the judge. He presented Zittrouer with a large trophy.
