Dear Editor,

Thanks very much to Effingham County for your support and great attendance of the Annual Community American Cancer Society Memorial/Honor Service held on Nov. 11, 2012. It was a service of remembrance for 12 citizens from our area with a plaque dedicated to each one. The late Connie Burns was honored for being a 12thCongressional District ACS Ambassador and for her many years of voluntary service in Effingham County.

Thanks to all who helped make the service successful. We appreciate the participation of Dr. Jerry Roe of Springfield United Methodist Church; Dr. Jim Cavanah of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; Margaret Edwards and Sandra White, local ACS volunteers. The ACS is grateful to the Effingham County Board of Education and Supt. Randy Shearouse for the use of the Board of Education Auditorium and Carolyn Conaway for preparing the area for our use. A special thanksgoes to Joann’s Florist of Springfield for donating 12 roses, one for each of the families. Thanks to Sandra White for decorations for the stage and for taking photographs of the families. We appreciate the Effingham Herald’s Pat Donahue for attending and coverage of the event.

Thanks to all in our community for your support of the American Cancer Society. Hopefully one day with more research, education, early detection and treatment, these services will no longer be necessary. Please support our yearly fundraiser, Relay for Life, next spring.
