District attorney was not missing in action in trial

Dear Editor,

Recently a campaign card was mailed out to voters criticizing District Attorney Richard Mallard for being MIA in three criminal cases. We do not know the situation in two of those cases, but we can speak with personal knowledge in the murder of Jack and Paula Futch.

Jack was our brother and Paula our sister-in-law. The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Department and the district attorney’s office were very professional and supportive during an extremely difficult time for our family. Throughout the entire ordeal, District Attorney Richard Mallard was never MIA. Mr. Mallard met with our family many times in conferences as well as in court hearings. As a family, we knew we could contact Mr. Mallard or anyone in the district attorney’s office for information, assistance and counseling.

We will always be grateful to Richard Mallard and the assistant district attorney Scott Brannen for the way the case was prosecuted. Mr. Mallard was not absent or “missing in action” in the Futch case. The district attorney and his staff worked effectively for justice in our case.
