Amid the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump has emerged as a strong wartime president, at war with a virus, an unseen enemy.
Thankfully, President Trump is the perfect man for the job. He has risen to the occasion beautifully and fully activated the power of the federal government and private sector to slow the spread of this disease. The administration’s actions have been quick, decisive and commendable; focused on containing and mitigating this virus.
After initially silencing scientists who tried to warn the world of the virus, the Chinese government first publicly identified the coronavirus outbreak on Dec. 31, 2019. Shortly after that, President Trump instituted a travel ban on China, which undoubtedly saved lives by slowing the spread. Quickly following, President Trump expanded the travel ban to Europe, which the CDC has labeled as the new epicenter of the virus.
Not only did President Trump quickly institute travel bans, but in early January he also assembled a task force to organize and lead a whole-of-government approach to the coronavirus. The Trump administration promptly committed billions in resources to address the virus which included signing a bill that will provide $7.76 billion to federal, state and local government agencies to fight against the virus, as well as authorized Medicare telehealth waivers totalling $500 million.
Additionally, President Trump transferred $35 million to the CDC to help state and local communities that have been impacted by the coronavirus, including $15 million for Georgia. He also continued his practice of donating his salary by giving it to the Department of Health and Human Services this quarter.
Not only has President Trump worked to ensure the federal government is supporting Americans, but he is also harnessing the full capacity of the private sector via public-private partnerships. Multiple companies such as Wal-Mart, Target and CVS are offering their expertise and products during this unprecedented time.
He met with the leadership of grocery stores throughout the country, confirming their commitment to remain open. He also worked with technology companies like Facebook and Google, who are using data to track the spread of the virus.
President Trump’s actions are even garnering praise from some of his usual critics. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D)thanked President Trump and Vice President Pence for having “facilitated this” and “moved quickly” on coronavirus testing.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) praised the Trump Administration’s coronavirus response, saying that “every single thing he said they followed through on.” New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio (D) said that the President’s china travel ban “has been, in many ways, warranted.”
Even Socialist Squad member Ilhan Omar commended the President’s “incredible and right response.”
Americans across the country are praising President Trump’s leadership for conducting the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to stop the spread of a virus in modern history. As we press forward in the weeks ahead, I'm grateful for the leadership that President Trump has shown in addressing the needs of our nation. He continues to put the health and safety of the American people first.
