Paul Cheeks drove in the first run in the University of South Carolina-Beaufort’s baseball program’s history Saturday, and the Sand Sharks swept a doubleheader from Southern Wesleyan University.
Cheeks, a South Effingham High School alum, doubled in leadoff batter Dustin Britt in the bottom of the first inning of the first game as the Sand Sharks won 9-4. Former Effingham County High star Spencer Jackson also had a double and a RBI in the opener.
Armstrong State opened its season Sunday by splitting a twinbill with defending Division II national champion Mt. Olive (N.C.).
The Trojans won the opener 6-2 as Dylan Holton hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth off former South Effingham ace Brandon McCreery. Josh Wilson, a former ECHS star, was 1-for-4, and former South Effingham catcher John Roberts went 0-for-3 for the Pirates. Jesse Osborne, also a SEHS alum, struck out two in one inning of work.
Wilson, a preseason all-Peach Belt Conference selection, went 1-for-5 with a double and RBI. Roberts drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as AASU won the nightcap 8-1.
Keifer Youmans went 2-for-4 with one RBI in Andrew College’s season-opening 9-5 loss to Northwest Florida State.
