Six new members will be inducted into the Georgia Southern University Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 11.
The class will be officially inducted at a luncheon Oct. 11, prior to the Georgia Southern football game against Idaho at Paulson Stadium, and the new inductees will be introduced and honored at halftime of the contest.
They are:
Lindsey Grossman Blom, women’s soccer, 1995-98
Three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Scholar selection in the South Region… CoSIDA Academic All-District and First Team Scholar All-America in 1998… Started every game during her four seasons… co-captain of the 1997 and 1998 teams… Georgia Southern Female Scholar Athlete of the Year (1999)… earned first team Academic All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America… first-team All-SoCon selection on two occasions… SoCon all-tournament team member (1995)… MVP of team in 1996… Eagle Women’s Soccer Freshman of the Year (1995)… earned Dorothy Hicks Southern Conference Graduate Scholarship (2000)… graduated summa cum laude with a degree in psychology and went on to earn two master’s degrees (counseling from Georgia Southern and kinesiology, emphasis in sport psychology from West Virginia)… earned doctorate in education from West Virginia in 2005… played two years for the Jacksonville Jade in the W-League, the highest level of women’s soccer… wrote soccer coaching book “Survival Guide for Coaching Youth Soccer.

Wayne Murphy, supporter
A supporter of Georgia Southern since 1973… served on the selection committee that led to the selection of Erk Russell as the football program’s first head coach… still active member of the Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation…  member of the Savannah Quarterback Club and St. Patrick’s Day Committee and is affectionately known as “Mr. Georgia Southern”

Dr. Patrick Spurgeon, football assistant coach, 1982-90
Full-time English literature professor and one of first assistant coaches hired by Erk Russell… Coached with Erk throughout his tenure as well as a year to help with transition to Coach Tim Stowers… Coached kickers and punters and served as lead scout for Coach Russell… He was on staff for four of Georgia Southern’s six national championships… Joined the staff at Youngstown State, where he won four more national championships.

Martina Veiglova-Mamuti, volleyball, 2001-03
Three-time All-Southern Conference selection and named SoCon Female Athlete of the Year for 2003-04… Two-time SoCon Player of the Year… most Outstanding Player at the 2003 SoCon Tourney and earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association… owns three of the top-5 places on Georgia Southern’s single-season kills list, including the top spot… ranks second at Georgia Southern in career kills, first in hitting percentage, third in aces and fifth in digs… named to the SoCon’s Team of Women to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Women’s Championships.

Danny Warbutton, gymnastics
Four-time Georgia state champion, four-time Southern Intercollegiate Gymnastics champion and a three-time all-American… 10th-place all-around finisher at the 1972 Olympic Trials… chosen to the United States team in 1977 and toured with Nadia Comaneci and the Romanian gymnasts… worked as an international coach with U.S. teams in South Africa, East Germany and England… inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2003… has coached 11 elite gymnasts, 45 national competitors and 10 state championship teams… more than 50 of his gymnasts have gone to college on full scholarships… served as chairman of the Pennsylvania Age Group and chairman of Regional Elite Coach of Coaches.

Nay Young, football, 1984-87
Started all four years at cornerback during competition years and played five years at the onset of the program… member of the 1985 and 1986 I-AA National Championship teams… finished the 1985 season ranked ninth nationally, averaging 11.2 yards per punt return… as a junior, led the team in pass breakups with 16 and interceptions with four… had 65 tackles (50 solo) and credited with seven pass breakups, one caused fumble, one recovered fumble and two interceptions… recorded five interceptions in four playoff games, including two versus Middle Tennessee State to secure the win in the quarterfinals… still holds single-season record for most kickoff returns with 33 and yardage with 715 yards… signed by the New Orleans Saints.
