SAVANNAH — More than 100 high school runners piled into Daffin Park on Saturday for the Saucony Classic. With 40 teams in action, the field was stacked with talent. Hans Ames, however, figured he was a good bet to win. The cross country star for South Effingham crushed the course and finished with an impressive time of 17:06. “It felt absolutely amazing because I've always wanted to win this meet since the first time I ran it freshman year and, yes, I did project to finish first before I got there,” Ames said. Ames stayed true to what he knows best and didn’t worry about the competition. “I never looked at any of the teams befor hand or other runners' times,” he said. “I just winged it for my first race of the season. After the end of the first mile, I led the way with a runner close behind me.” South Effingham head coach Laura Soles had a gifted bunch that showed why it is one of the top teams in the state. The Mustangs finished in second place overall, just one point behind Pace Academy. "(This was the) best first meet ever,” Soles said.
