BRUNSWICK — Chad Sanders connected with Jarre Hall with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 to play in the game, lifting the Glynn Academy Red Terrors to a 10-6 win over Effingham County on Friday night.

The Rebels had taken a 6-3 lead when Jackie Chen’s 31-yard field goal with 4:37 to play, a line drive kick, barely cleared the crossbar but made it over.

The Red Terrors started at their own 34, and Sanders hit Hall with passes of 21 and 11 yards to set up their winning throw.

Rebels coach Jack Webb said he told his team before the game they had been playing 96 percent of the game.

“We need to play the whole 100 percent,” he said. “We need to finish the drill.”

The Rebels (2-4, 2-3 Region 3-AAAA) started at their own 20 on their final possession, and quarterback Chris Hamilton appeared to break free for what was going to be a huge gain. But free safety Frank Demery tripped him up for a 5-yard pickup, and the drive eventually died when Hamilton went out of bounds while scrambling.

“I’m very proud of my team,” Red Terrors coach Rob Ridings said. “It was a slugfest, and I’m glad to be the last ones standing. Our boys don’t quit, and they showed that tonight.”

Hamilton’s 44-yard strike to Marquel Manior set up Chen’s go-ahead kick, putting Effingham at the Glynn Academy 19. But on fourth-and-1 at the Red Terror 10, an illegal motion pushed the Rebels back and they were forced to settle for the field goal.

Brett Bearden’s 26-yard field goal in the first quarter gave Glynn Academy (4-2, 3-2) a 3-0 lead. Chen tied the game at 3-3 with a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Hamilton finished the game 3-of-5 for 92 yards and also rushed for 65 yards.

“I’m glad to see us passing the ball more and being more effective at it,” Webb said. “We’re getting better at it.”

Glynn’s Darryl Armstead led all rushers with 91 yards on 15 carries. Sanders was 8-of-12 passing for 82 yards.
