The Rincon All-Stars defeated the Effingham County All-Stars 9-8 in extra innings on Saturday in Lyons in their first game of the district tournament for 10 and under (mite) boys.  

The Rincon All-Stars had led the entire game until Effingham tied the score in the bottom of the fifth inning. A regular game for the mite boys’ lasts six innings but it took two extra innings to decide the outcome.

Rincon opened the scoring in the top of the first by scoring five runs. Effingham came back in the bottom of the inning to score three times. It was 5-4 after two innings, and each team scored a run in the fourth to make it 6-5.  

Rincon then scored two in the top of the frame to make it 8-5 before Effingham tied it in the bottom of the fifth with a three spot.

The game remained tied 8-8 after the regularly scheduled six innings and after the seventh inning.

In the top of the eighth inning Michael Duncan led off with a double and scored on a Ryan Nease single to give Rincon a 9-8 lead. They held Effingham scoreless in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Rincon’s roster consisted of Austin Jeffers, Austin Norwood, Auston White, Blake Fowler, Brad Sawyer, Dale Colson, David Sharpe, Eddie Shearouse, Michael Duncan, Ryan Nease and Tate Robinson.

They are coached by John Sawyer, Mike Sharpe and Randy White.

In the 9-8 win, Jeffers had three hits and scored a run. Austin Norwood had a big hit; and White had three hits and scored a run. Fowler had four hits, a RBI and scored two runs.

Sawyer had a big RBI and Colson had three hits, scored a run and had a RBI.

Sharpe had three hits, scored a run and had a RBI. Shearouse had two hits, scored a run and had a run batted in.

Duncan had four hits, had two RBIs and scored a run. Nease had three hits and had two RBIs and Robinson had a hit and scored a run.

Both teams will continue play for the district championship this week in Lyons.
