One of Chris Wolski’s last acts as boys basketball coach at South Effingham High School was a happy occasion — watching one of his players sign a college scholarship.

Wolski witnessed center Stephen Davis inking a letter of intent with North Greenville (S.C.) University on Monday and is himself headed back close to his home. Wolski, who played at Campbell High School in the northern Atlanta suburb of Smyrna, is taking the job as head basketball coach at the soon-to-open North Paulding High School.

“I’m going to miss the kids,” Wolski said. “I’m going to miss all the kids here and the people I’ve met.”

Family weighed heavily in his decision to leave after one year at South Effingham.

“This is just a move I had to make for my family,” Wolski said. “I just felt I had to get closer to home.”

The Mustangs went 10-16 last season, including a 94-76 win over Class A No. 8-ranked Calvary in their final home game. In addition to Davis, guard Daniel Browning has been invited to walk-on at Augusta State. Browning led the Mustangs in scoring last year, registering 35 points in a win over Bluffton and topping the 20-point mark in eight other games. Browning had offers from Piedmont and LaGrange before opting to go to Augusta State.

The Jaguars went 24-8 last season.
