GUYTON – Deja vu? Effingham County’s boys lost possession to give South Effingham a chance to tie in the final 20 seconds of their lacrosse rematch April 18.

But this time, the Rebels’ defense stiffened and held on for a wild 7-6 victory at the Corral.

ECHS (6-9) ended its season with three straight wins and placed fifth (2-4) in the Class 5A-6A Area 7 standings.

SEHS doubled its win total from 2023 and finished the season with an 8-5 mark and sixth (1-5) in area play.

About a month ago, the cross-county rivals played a non-area affair. The Rebels had a one-goal lead, turned the ball over in the final minute of regulation and gave up the tying goal, then lost in overtime.

Life has a way of repeating itself.

Edward Hall

“That’s exactly what I was thinking. We were giving them another opportunity, just like the last time,” ECHS coach Owen Nix said.

But the lead held up. Rebel freshman Edward Hall had four goals, sophomores Brycen Thomas and Jesse Strickland and junior Jayden Darwood added one apiece.

Earlier in the week, ECHS defeated Savannah Christian 10-8 and Saturday, knocked off Grovetown 11-3

“We’ll lose 10 seniors so I think they were happy to go out on a winning note,” Nix said. “I think they were happy for me to go out on a winning note too.”

Nix won’t be back next year. Nix accepted a job as assistant principal at Effingham College and Career Academy and was allowed to finish this season.

Nix almost single handedly brought lacrosse to the county. In 2016, he started the Effingham Eagles – a club team that combined athletes from ECHS and SEHS.

The schools began playing lacrosse sanctioned by the Georgia HIgh School Association in the spring of 2020.

“You’re seeing kids play in the summer. Schools in our area have definitely closed the gap (with more experienced teams around the state) and that’s great to see,” Nix said. “The game’s been good to me. I’ll still be around. I just won’t be on the sidelines.”

TRACK AND FIELD

SEHS, ECHS set school records at Plankenhorn Meet

South Effingham and Effingham County track and field athletes continue to lower times and increase distances and heights as the regular season ended with the Derrick Plankenhorn Meet at Southeast Bulloch High School on April 17.
