Local students earn GSU honors

STATESBORO—Georgia Southern University recently recognized 175 students on the 2015 summer semester president’s list.

Hannah Youmans, majoring in sports management from Guyton, has been named to the list for excellence in academics. To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must have at least a 4.0 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.

Georgia Southern University recently recognized more than 200 students for excellence in academics on the 2015 summer semester dean’s list.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.

Making dean’s list from Effingham County were: Chancey Garrett of Guyton; Elizabeth Huggins of Rincon; and Joshua Summitt of Rincon.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
