The 2011 Marching Band season is history and the South Effingham Marching Mustangs had another banner year.  The marching band begins its season each July with band camp, where band members learn basic marching techniques and the mechanics of their competition show.

This year’s show, entitled “Letters Home,” was a new challenge in music composition, drill and marching.   With each performance they built in new routines and music in preparation for the marching band competition season.

Their hard work and determination paid off on Oct. 15 when the Marching Mustangs competed at the Grovetown Warrior Invitational — their first event of the 2011 Georgia Marching Band Series contests.  At Grovetown, for the second year in a row, they took home the Grand Championship award, as well as Best Band in Class AAAA and Best Overall for Drum Major, Percussion, and Effect.

On Oct. 22, the Marching Mustangs traveled to Warner Robins to compete in the 14th annual Heart of Georgia Marching Band Invitational.  Eighteen bands took the field and the Marching Mustangs took Best Band in Class AAAA and Best in Class AAAA for Color Guard and Percussion. They rounded out the evening taking second place overall Percussion, third place overall Drum Major and third place overall Color Guard.  They placed in final scoring as second runner up overall, falling behind only the Class AAAAA bands that took the top two awards.

The Marching Mustangs were the host band for the 2nd Annual Marching Mustang Invitational at The Corral in Guyton on Oct. 29.  The Marching Mustangs put on an exhibition that served as a warmup for the Georgia Marching Band Series Championship Finals, hosted by Jeff Davis High School on Nov. 5.

Eight bands competed for top honors at Jeff Davis in the Georgia Marching Band Series finals format. The Marching Mustangs took the Best Band in Class AAAA trophy, Best in Contest Award Finals for Drum Major, Percussion, Music Effect, and Overall Effect.  The Marching Mustangs placed second in Marching and Color Guard.

As a finale to the evening, tthe Marching Mustangs were awarded the trophy for Grand Champions in the Race for the Cup Series Finals for the second year in a row.
