Rachel Miles, a junior at Presbyterian College, was recently honored with the MLK Drum Major for Service Presidential Volunteer Service award. The award recognizes citizens who have acheived a certain number of hours of service over the past year.

Over the past year, Miles, from Rincon, has been a camp counselor at her presbytery’s church camp, staying all day and night. In addition to this, she has done various volunteer projects with her church such as chaperoning mission trips and helping to run vacation Bible school.

Miles is a member of the sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma and, as a member, she has volunteered with the Robbie Paige Memorial and worked with Habitat for Humanity projects.

“I love working with kids,” Miles said. “I just love the way that children think and imagine.  I grew up attending the camp and always knew that I wanted to be a counselor. I always saw the counselors as role models and wanted to be just like them when I was their age. I hope that I have been able to live up to that role for other kids.”

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
