BOSTON A Boston father woke up early to help his young sons shower their mother with love, gifts and gratitude on her birthday.

Not entirely unheard of, until you get this small detail: The couple is divorced.

Billy Flynn wants his sons to understand the importance of treating women well, even when a relationship goes south. He saw his ex-wifes birthday as the perfect opportunity for an object lesson and posted about the experience on his Facebook page.

I got up early and brought flowers and cards and a gift over for the kids to give her and helped them make her breakfast, he wrote in the post.

While Flynn wrote that he does this type of thing on the regular, he said hes always surprised by the reaction it elicits from some.

Per usual someone asked me why the hell I still do things for her all the time, he wrote. This annoys me.

The answer, Flynn wrote, is simple.

Im raising two little men. The example I set for how I treat their mom is going to significantly shape how they see and treat women and affect their perception of relationships, he wrote in the post, which was picked up by the Love What Matters Facebook group.

Flynns message has resonated in a big way. Since his words were reposted on Sunday, the post has garnered more than 600,000 reactions and 175,500 shares.

Inspired by Flynns post, thousands of people have shared their stories of friendship and love in the face of divorce.

My ex and I have always put our daughter first, one commenter wrote. Her dad and I even do a date night with the ex once a year and travel from CT to NJ for her sorority fundraiser. It kept her whole You are doing a great thing for your kids.

Currently taking care of my ex-husband while he recovers from a minor stroke, another wrote. Hopeful that our two little boys, through witnessing this, will understand that compassion isnt selective.

Flynn told Today hes glad his story is inspiring other divorced parents to maintain a respectful relationship for their childrens sake.

Im not saying everyone needs to help the kids make breakfast, but the message people are getting is that you can show each other respect and care in front of the kids, and help the kids care for that parent, regardless of how you feel about each other, he said.

Divorce, Flynn writes, isnt easy, but its up to the parents to keep the ugly side away from those most vulnerable.

Rise above it and be an example, his post reads. This is bigger than you. Raise good men. Raise strong women. Please. The world needs them, now more than ever.
Its toxic: New study says blue light from tech devices can speed up blindness

It turns out checking Twitter or Facebook before bed is bad for your health.

A new study from the University of Toledo found that blue light from digital devices can transform molecules in your eyes retina into cell killers.

That process can lead to age-related macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of blindness in the United States, according to the researchs extract.

Blue light is a common issue for many modern Americans. Blue light is emitted from screens, most notably at night, causing sleep loss, eye strain and a number of other issues.

Dr. Ajith Karunarathne, assistant professor in the UT Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, said our constant exposure to blue light cant be blocked by the lens or cornea.

"It's no secret that blue light harms our vision by damaging the eye's retina. Our experiments explain how this happens, and we hope this leads to therapies that slow macular degeneration, such as a new kind of eye drop, he said.

Macular degeneration is an incurable eye disease that often affects those in their 50s or 60s. It occurs after the death of photoreceptor cells in the retina. Those cells need retinal to sense light and help signal the brain.

The research team found blue light exposure created poisonous chemical molecules that killed photoreceptor cells

"It's toxic. If you shine blue light on retinal, the retinal kills photoreceptor cells as the signaling molecule on the membrane dissolves," said Kasun Ratnayake, a Ph.D. student researcher working in Karunarathne's cellular photo chemistry group. "Photoreceptor cells do not regenerate in the eye. When they're dead, they're dead for good."

However, the researchers found a molecule called alpha-tocopherol, which comes from Vitamin E, can help prevent cell death, according to Futurism.

The researchers plan to review how light from TVs, cellphones and tablet screens affect the eyes as well.

"If you look at the amount of light coming out of your cellphone, it's not great but it seems tolerable," said Dr. John Payton, visiting assistant professor in the UT Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. "Some cellphone companies are adding blue-light filters to the screens, and I think that is a good idea."

Indeed, Apple released a Night Shift mode two years ago to help quell blue lights strain on the eyes, according to The Verge. The screen will dim into a warmer, orange light that will cause less stress on the eyes.
