The United Way, Effingham Recreation and Parks and other sponsors welcomed a big crowd to the annual Back-to-School Blowout on Tuesday.

Students received free school supplies and haircuts, and enjoyed entertainment and free food.

The event brought out more than 1,100 people, including 690 children who were served, according to organizer Destiny Bradshaw.

Those numbers were more than double the turnout for last year's Back-to-School Blowout, Bradshaw said.
