Larry Fort was named the Rotary Club of Effingham County’s Herb Jones Volunteer of the Year, during the annual awards banquet Thursday at New Ebenezer Retreat Center.

Fort has been a volunteer with Faith Equestrian Therapeutic Center in 2012. The center was on the verge of closing because of a lack of funds. Fort saw a report about the center’s situation and decided to help.

Through his efforts and those of his wife Linda, the center has brought in more donations and volunteers. Fort recently built a shavings barn with a roll-back roof, so dump trucks could unload wood shavings that will be used for horse bedding.

Fort also volunteers with the children who come to ride and has joined the FETC board of directors.

The Rotary Club also made a $500 donation to FETC in Fort’s name.

First runner-up was Roy Callaway, who volunteers with Effingham County 4-H, and second runner-up was Family Promise volunteer Joe Tallent.

The 4-H received a $300 donation, and Family Promise received a $200 donation from the Rotary Club.
