Relay For Life
• When: Friday, 7 p.m.-1 a.m.
• Where: Effingham County High School track
• About: The annual American Cancer Society fundraiser will include the Miss World Cure Womanless Beauty Pageant and the Purple Glove Dance. This year’s theme is “Relaying Around the World for a Cure.”

The Effingham County Relay For Life Night is scheduled for Friday from 7 p.m.-1 a.m. at Effingham County High School. Twenty-eight teams have been raising money toward this year’s goal of $58,500 to be presented to the American Cancer Society.

Several musical groups are on tap to provide entertainment. In addition, there will be a Miss World Cure Womanless Beauty Pageant, with contestants dressed to represent different countries reflecting this year’s theme, “Relaying Around The World For A Cure.” The winner will be determined by a vote based on dollars. Everyone attending will be issued a pair of purple gloves, to participate in a spectacular Purple Glove Dance.

Each Relay team will have a tent around the track where food and crafts will be available for purchase, to raise even more money for Relay. People can vote through their use of their dollars for the best tent.

The highlight of the night will be the luminaria ceremony, scheduled for 9:30. Luminaria purchased in honor of or in memory of a loved one stricken with cancer will line the track and be lit. All other lights will be extinguished and participants will walk the track in silence to remember those lost to cancer and those whose survivorship is celebrated.

Luminaries will be available to purchase that night up to 8:30. In prior years, there have been more than 1,000 luminaries around the track.

Relay for Life is an annual event celebrated throughout Georgia and across the country to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s mission.
