Arrest made in Wednesday night shooting

RINCON – Wednesday, May 31, at 7:05 p.m., the Rincon Police Department received a call in reference to a shooting at the Crossroads Academy. Officers responded and found a 17-year-old male in a vehicle with a gunshot wound.  

During the initial investigation, detectives discovered the actual incident location was in Bridgewood Subdivision. A suspect was identified, and a search warrant was obtained and executed on a house, believed to be the incident location, in the 100 block of Fox Trace.

The suspect, 17-year-old DaMarion Mapp, was taken into custody. Aggravated assault charges against Mapp are pending upon the conclusion of the investigation, according to a release from the City of Rincon.  

The victim was transported to Memorial Hospital in Savannah with serious injuries. At the time of this release, he is listed in stable condition and was conscious and alert.

In a statement to the Herald on Thursday morning, Effingham County Schools Superintendent Dr. Yancy Ford stated, "The shooting in Rincon yesterday was not connected to Crossroads Academy. The incident occurred at a home in Rincon and the car stopped in the turning lane at the intersection of (Hwy.) 21 and 4th Street. Crossroads Academy and the Effingham School District were not involved in any way."
